Cyclists plea on bus lanes

CAMDEN cycling campaigners begged council chiefs to resist plans to allow motorcycles in bus lanes on Monday. Campaign chairwoman Jean Dollimore said: We believe that allowing motorcycles into the bus lanes will be detrimental. Cyclists like to use bus lanes as a refuge from the other trafffic. The bus lane plan is being pushed by City Hall after it was a campaign issue for mayor Boris Johnson.

New parking costs for motorbikes

03/01/07 Westminster wants to increase the number of parking bays Motorcycle users will face new charges to park in central London under a draft proposal from Westminster Council. The fees are needed to expand parking for the increase in motorcycles following the introduction of the congestion charge, the council said. Under the proposal, riders will be charged between £1 and £1.50 a day. Motorbikes currently park for free. About 16,000 motorcyclists ride into central London everyday, up 40% from 10 years ago. The fees will go towards new bays and providing secure motorbike stands. Westminster Council said that the increase in motorbikes coming into the city had led to riders damaging other peoples´ bikes, as they try to cram into too few spaces. There are currently enough spaces for 4,500 motorbikes to park at any one time. The new proposal aims to increase this by up to 500. The council is also proposing a new by-law which will allow traffic wardens to penalise car drivers for parking in the motorbike-only spaces. According to a Westminster Council spokesman, the cost of the scheme will be more than £80,000. ´Bitter pill´ But Will Beeley of motorcycleparking.com said the council had not properly considered other means of funding the bays. He suggested sponsorship through advertising by local businesses. "Whilst I understand why bikers will be annoyed that they are going to have to start to pay, I realise that the funding has to come from somewhere," Mr Beeley said. "If motorcyclists see that they are getting something for their money, then I´m sure that it will be a less bitter pill to take."

Congestion charge rises to £8

London´s congestion charge has risen by more than 60% in a move condemned by businesses and motoring organisations. The Forum of Private Business (FPB) has handed a petition against the rise from £5 to £8 per day for entering the city centre to the London Assembly. It says the charge stops potential customers entering the zone. But mayor Ken Livingstone says up to £45m raised from the hike will improve public transport and build on what the charge has achieved so far. Fleet vehicles charges rose to £7 and those who pay monthly or annually get discounts. ´Easier to pay´ The road toll, introduced in February 2003, has been credited with reducing congestion in central London by 30% with 70,000 fewer vehicles entering the zone a day. London mayor Ken Livingstone has said: "This will build on what has already been achieved in terms of extended bus provision, and in due course providing additional underground capacity. "In addition, large discounts on monthly and annual payments will make the charge easier to pay for regular users and should lead to fewer penalty charge notices being incurred by drivers who forget to pay the charge." Those paying on a monthly basis will get three charge-free days and those paying yearly will get 40 charge-free days. Conservative Congestion Charge spokesman Angie Bray said the rise was a "serious blow" to city businesses. ´Damaging and retrograde´ "The revenue levels of the current charge have been so disappointing as it´s a very expensive system to run," she said. "This is a serious blow to many of London´s businesses who are already in pain with the current charge level of £5. "I suspect they are going to be in agony when it goes to £8." Lynne Featherstone, Liberal Democrat London transport spokesperson, said: "Traffic levels in central London are still falling, yet our Labour mayor slams a 60% hike on congestion charges." Dan Bridgett of the London Chamber of Commerce called the price rise "damaging and retrograde step which will appal the businesses of all sizes which are already being hammered by the charge".

The lock 2 lock (l2l) Scheme

Why has it been set up? Recent figures show an alarming rise is motorcycle thefts around Britain. Well-organised criminals have realised that bikers often can’t find anything to secure their bike or scooter to and have to leave their bikes with their chain or wire lock merely wrapped around the wheel to prevent it from being driven away. The problem with this. The criminals simply drive a large van up to the motorcycle. They then slide scaffold poles through the wheels and lift the bike into their van. This can take as little as TWENTY SECONDS making it very difficult for the police to find witnesses – which may be why only sixteen percent of stolen bikes are recovered. The L2L scheme prevents this from happening by simply allowing its members to form a daisy chain of interlocked bikes. It only takes 2 bikes to be locked together to prevent this type of theft. A fantastic idea. Click the link below for more info..

PEUGEOT LUDIX BLASTER – GTI FUN AT A BUDGET PRICE

The new Ludix Blaster scooter from Peugeot, due on sale in the UK this April, offers Gti fun at a budget price. By combining the modular Ludix platform with a high performance liquid-cooled 2-stroke engine, Peugeot have created a scooter with an unrivalled price/performance ratio. Peugeot developed the Ludix concept to take advantage of modern materials and the latest production techniques to create an economic range of scooters. However, by inserting a liquid cooled engine capable of producing 6.2 BHP, riders will experience class-leading acceleration, thanks to an incredible power to weight ratio. The French Company has ensured that the Ludix Blaster has all of the styling cues expected of a contemporary sports scooter. At the front end you will find 155mm ‘wavy’ brake disc, ‘upside down’ telescopic forks and cooling scoops on the side of the leg shields. The rider’s feet rest on alloy footplates and at the back is an inverted ‘sports’ silencer The Peugeot Ludix Blaster sells for £1,349- on the road, which is unbeatable value when compared with other European sports scooters. In fact, the Ludix Blaster provides reliable and stylish transport for less than the price of many modern accessories, such as plasma screen televisions, stainless steel American style fridges, garden tractors, etc. Hence Peugeot’s assertion that every home should have one. Like all Peugeot scooters, the Ludix Blaster benefits from a 2-year warranty.
